揺ゆれる大地だいちは、生いきている

The other day, on July 28, an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 7 occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture. This earthquake was named the “Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake.” In Kumamoto Prefecture, an earthquake of almost the same scale also occurred ten years ago, in 2016.
先日せんじつの7月がつ28日にち、熊本県くまもとけんで震度しんど7の地震じしんが発生はっせいしました。この地震じしんは、「令和れいわ8年ねん熊本地震くまもとじしん」と名付なづけられました。熊本県くまもとけんでは、10年前ねんまえの2016年ねんにも、ほぼ同おなじ規模きぼの地震じしんが起おきています。

Active faults that cause earthquakes run through the prefecture. Across Japan, there are about 2,000 active faults, counting only those that have been confirmed. Each major active fault has its own name, and this earthquake occurred near the “Hinagu Fault Zone.”
県内けんないには、地震じしんを引ひき起おこす活断層かつだんそうが走はしっています。日本全国にほんぜんこくには、確認かくにんされているだけでも約やく2,000の活断層かつだんそうがあります。主要しゅような活断層かつだんそうにはそれぞれ名前なまえがあり、今回こんかいの地震じしんは「日奈久断層帯ひなぐだんそうたい」の周辺しゅうへんで発生はっせいしました。

Japan is among the world’s top-class countries in the density of seismometers. Because of this, even small tremors are detected, and Japan is considered “the country with the most earthquakes in the world, on record.” On the other hand, in terms of the number of earthquakes that actually occur, Indonesia is thought to have more.
日本にほんは、世界せかいでもトップクラスに地震計じしんけいが密集みっしゅうしています。そのため、小ちいさな揺ゆれまで捉とらえられ、「記録上きろくじょう、世界せかいで最もっとも地震じしんが多おおい国くに」とされます。一方いっぽう、実際じっさいに発生はっせいする地震じしんの数かずでは、インドネシアの方ほうが多おおいと考かんがえられています。

Countries with active seismic activity include Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Chile, New Zealand, and Mexico. All of these countries lie on the circum-Pacific volcanic belt, the “Ring of Fire.” About 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur in this belt-shaped zone.
地震じしん活動かつどうが活発かっぱつな国くにには、インドネシア、日本にほん、パプアニューギニア、フィリピン、チリ、ニュージーランド、メキシコなどがあります。これらの国くにはいずれも、環太平洋かんたいへいよう火山帯かざんたい「リング・オブ・ファイア」に位置いちしています。世界せかいの地震じしんのおよそ9割わりが、この帯状おびじょう地域ちいきで発生はっせいします。

The presence of a volcano means that plates are colliding beneath it. When an oceanic plate containing water sinks down, part of the mantle melts and becomes magma. When that magma rises toward the surface, a volcano erupts. For both earthquakes and volcanoes, the beginning is the movement of the plates.
火山かざんの存在そんざいは、その地下ちかでプレートがぶつかり合あっていることを意味いみします。水分すいぶんを含ふくんだ海うみのプレートが沈しずみ込こむと、マントルの一部いちぶが溶とけてマグマになります。そのマグマが地上ちじょうへ上昇じょうしょうすると、火山かざんが噴火ふんかします。地震じしんも火山かざんも、始はじまりはプレートの動うごきです。

The Japanese archipelago lies at the boundary of four large plates. The plates are moving several centimeters each year. When that strain accumulates, at some point it slips all at once.
日本列島にほんれっとうは、4つの大おおきなプレートの境界きょうかいにあります。プレートは年間ねんかん数すうセンチずつ動うごいています。そのひずみが蓄積ちくせきされると、ある時とき、一気いっきにずれ動うごきます。

What moves is not only the sun, the stars, and the moon in the sky. The ground beneath our feet, too, keeps moving. Nature brings blessings, but at times it rages and gives us trials. People had no choice but to recognize there the existence of gods beyond human power. This is the view of nature at the root of the Japanese heart.
動うごいているのは、空そらにある太陽たいよう、星ほし、月つきだけではありません。足元あしもとの大地だいちも、動うごき続つづけています。自然しぜんは恵めぐみをもたらす一方いっぽう、時ときに荒あらぶり、試練しれんを与あたえます。人々ひとびとはそこに、人ひとの力ちからが及およばない神々かみがみの存在そんざいを認みとめざるを得えなかったのです。これが日本人にほんじんの心こころの根底こんていにある自然観しぜんかんです。
