虫むしの声こえ ― 日本にほんの秋あきのBGM

In the autumn nights of Japan, the chorus of insects echoes.
日本にほんの秋あきの夜よるには、虫むしたちのコーラスが響ひびいています。

In Japanese, they are expressed as “the voice of insects,” turning each sound into language.
日本語にほんごでは、「虫むしの声こえ」と表現ひょうげんし、それぞれの声こえを「言語化げんごか」しています。

“Reen, reen”, “Chinchirorin”, “Korokorokoro”, “Gachagacha”, “Suicchon.”
「リーン、リーン」「チンチロリン」「コロコロコロ」「ガチャガチャ」「スイッチョン」

Curiously, many Japanese people can tell which insect’s “voice” it is.
不思議ふしぎなことに、多おおくの日本人にほんじんは、どの虫むしの「声こえ」かが分わかります。

Not only the voices of insects, but also sounds that nature produces, such as wind, rain, and waves, are expressed in “words.”
虫むしの声こえだけでなく、風かぜや雨あめ、波なみの音おとなど自然しぜんが生うみ出だす音おとも「言葉ことば」で表あらわします。

In these words, an ancient sensibility remains — one that has turned the sounds of nature directly into language.
こうした言葉ことばには、自然しぜんの音おとをそのまま言葉ことばにしてきた古ふるい感覚かんかくが残のこっています。

These are called “onomatopoeia,” and Japanese is said to have especially many — as many as 4,500.
これを「オノマトペ」と呼よびますが、日本語にほんごは特とくに多おおく、4500ほどにもなると言いわれています。
