Giant Animals Appear After the Harvest: Amazing Wara (Straw) Art in Niigata!

収穫後に現れる巨大動物。新潟のわらアートがすごい！

Niigata City: A major agricultural city that boasts the largest rice production volume in Japan.

日本一の米の生産量を誇る大農業都市・新潟市。

Even among them, Nishikan Ward is known as one of Japan’s leading rice-growing regions.

その中でも西蒲区は、日本有数の稲作地帯として知られています。

Here, after the rice harvest, art sculptures are made from ‘wara’ (rice straw) collected from the surrounding rice fields.

ここでは、稲刈りのあと、周囲の田んぼから集めた「わら」でアート作品が作られます。

Every year, giant straw sculptures of dinosaurs and animals are displayed in Uwasekigata Park, and it bustles with large crowds.

毎年、上堰潟公園には恐竜や動物の巨大なわらアートが並び、多くの人でにぎわいます。

The sculptures are produced through a collaboration between local university students and artisans.

作品は、地元の大学生や職人たちが協力して制作。

As a unique event where agriculture and art have merged, it is attracting attention from home and abroad.

農業とアートが融合したユニークなイベントとして、国内外から注目を集めています。

It is another ‘harvest,’ born amidst the landscape where people grow rice.

お米を育てる風景の中に生まれる、もうひとつの「実り」です。
