The Worms Within Came from the Universe

腹はらの虫むしは、宇宙うちゅうから来きた

Hara no mushi (the worm in the belly), mushi no shirase (a worm’s warning), mushi ga sukanai (the worm doesn’t like it), mushi ga ii (the worm has it easy).
腹はらの虫むし、虫むしの知しらせ、虫むしが好すかない、虫むしがいい。

The Japanese language is full of “worms.”
日本人にほんじんの言葉ことばには、多おおくの「虫むし」が顔かおを出だします。

So what exactly is this “worm”?
そもそもこの「虫むし」は、いったい何なんなのでしょうか。

And how long have we been living with it?
いつの時代じだいから、私わたしたちはこの「虫むし」と付つき合あってきたのでしょうか。

English has something similar: when you feel nervous and restless, you have “butterflies in your stomach.”
英語えいごでも、そわそわして落おち着つかない気持きもちを「お腹なかの中なかに蝶ちょうがいる」と言いいます。

In Chinese, someone who can read your mind is asked, “Are you the worm in my belly?”
中国語ちゅうごくごでは、相手あいての心こころを読よめる人ひとのことを「あなたは私わたしの腹はらの中なかの虫むしなのか」と言いいます。

It seems that people everywhere have sensed that something lives inside the belly.
人ひとはどこの国くにでも、腹はらの中なかに何なにかが住すんでいると感かんじてきたようです。

From a medical point of view, the first thing that comes to mind is gut bacteria.
まず、医学いがくの目めで見みて思おもい当あたるのは「腸内細菌ちょうないさいきん」です。

In recent years, research on the “gut-brain axis” has shown that the brain and the gut influence each other.
近年きんねんは「脳腸相関のうちょうそうかん」が説とかれ、脳のうと腸ちょうが互たがいに影響えいきょうし合あっていることが分わかってきました。

In fact, 80 to 90 percent of the signals in the nerve linking the gut and the brain are said to travel “upward,” from the gut to the brain.
そして、腸ちょうと脳のうを結むすぶ神経しんけいの信号しんごうの八〜九割はちきゅうわりは、腸ちょうから脳のうへ向むかう「上のぼり」だといわれます。
