地震大国、日本――揺れる心と未来

According to the current tally of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, the number of islands that exist in Japan is stated as 14,125.

現在の国土地理院の集計では、日本に存在する島の数は14,125島とされています。

Recently, earthquakes have been occurring one after another in the Tokara Islands, the southern tip of such an ‘island nation’ as Japan, located in Kyushu’s Kagoshima Prefecture.

そんな“島国”日本の南端、九州・鹿児島県のトカラ列島で、近ごろ地震が相次いでいます。

From the end of June 2024, earthquakes occurred frequently, and in July, the number exceeded 2,200.

2024年6月末から地震が頻発し、7月には2,200回を超えました。

Many seismologists exist in Japan, and, for example, they are predicting that the Nankai Trough earthquake has an ‘80% probability of occurring within the next 30 years’.

日本には多くの地震学者が存在し、たとえば南海トラフ地震は「今後30年以内に発生する確率80％」と予測しています。

‘Trough’ means ‘the bottom of a boat’ in English, and plate tectonics, which centers on the movement of seabed plates, is the basis of current earthquake prediction.

「トラフ」とは英語で「舟底」を意味し、現在の地震予測は、海底のプレートの動きを軸とするプレートテクトニクスが基本です。

However, there are also criticisms on the grounds that many major earthquakes, including the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, could not be predicted.

ただ、能登半島地震を含め多くの大地震が予測できなかったとして、批判もあります。

In recent years, a theory called ‘plume tectonics,’ which focuses on the flow of heat in the underground mantle, has also been attracting attention.

近年では、地下のマントルの熱の流れに注目する「プルームテクトニクス」という理論も注目されています。

Currently, Mt. Shinmoedake in Kagoshima is erupting, and there are also voices calling for the necessity of ‘heat flow monitoring’.

現在、鹿児島の新燃岳が噴火しており、「熱流のモニタリング」の必要性を訴える声もあります。

Between the Tokara Islands and Kyushu, there is a giant submarine volcano called the ‘Kikai Caldera’.

トカラ列島と九州の間には、「鬼界カルデラ」と呼ばれる巨大な海底火山があります。

There is also a theory that this volcano caused a massive eruption approximately 7,300 years ago and made the Jomon people of that time migrate all over Japan, and even to various parts of the world.

この火山は約7,300年前に大噴火を起こし、当時の縄文人たちを日本中、さらには世界各地へ移動させたという説もあります。

A rumor that ‘a great disaster will occur on July 5, 2025’ spread, sparked by a ‘prophecy’ depicted in a single manga.

「2025年7月5日に大災害が起きる」という噂が、一冊の漫画に描かれた”予言”をきっかけに広まりました。

As it turned out, that day passed safely, but the importance of preparing for an emergency, such as “stockpiling” and “confirming evacuation sites,” does not change.

結果的にその日は無事に過ぎましたが、いざという時に備えた「備蓄」や「避難場所の確認」の重要性は、変わることがありません。
