Rice Fields as Canvas!? Spectacular “Tanbo Art”

From summer to autumn, “Tanbo art (rice field art)” reaches its peak viewing season across Japan.

夏から秋にかけて、全国各地で「田んぼアート」が見頃を迎えます。

In Japan, once you leave the cities, rice field scenery spreads out all around in every region.

日本では、都会を離れると、どの地方でもあたり一面に田んぼの風景が広がります。

Tanbo art is to use those rice fields as a canvas and draw pictures or characters using rice plants of different colors.

その田んぼをキャンバスにして、色のちがう稲で絵や文字を描くのが「田んぼアート」です。

One of the most famous examples is in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.

なかでも有名なのが、埼玉県行田市。

Every year, a vast rice field of about 2.8 hectares reveals art that looks just like a painting.

毎年、約2.8ヘクタールの広大な田んぼに、まるで絵画のようなアートが浮かび上がります。

In 2015, it was certified by Guinness World Records as the “largest Tanbo art in the world.”

2015年には、「世界最大の田んぼアート」としてギネス世界記録にも認定されました。

It is a form of art unique to Japan, where rice is a staple food.

米を主食とする、日本ならではのアートです。
