“Faith” That Carries the Sea’s Bounty Forward

海うみの恵めぐみをつなぐ「信しん」

This month’s cover features Shin Hakkenden: Inukai Genpachi — Opening of the Ise-ebi Fishing Season by the painting zealot Bunta Inoue. Amid raging waves, Inukai Genpachi firmly grips a giant Japanese spiny lobster. The vivid reds and golds, swirling waves, and his powerful stance against the seabed convey the tension of confronting the life force of the sea.
今月号こんげつごうの表紙ひょうしは、画狂人がきょうじん・井上文太いのうえぶんた氏しの「シン・八犬伝はっけんでん犬飼現八いぬかいげんぱち伊勢海老漁解禁いせえびりょうかいきん」です。荒波あらなみの中なか、巨大きょだいな伊勢海老いせえびをつかむ犬飼現八いぬかいげんぱち。鮮あざやかな赤あかと金きん、渦巻うずまく波なみ、海底かいていを踏ふみしめる姿すがたから、海うみの命いのちと向むき合あう緊張感きんちょうかんが伝つたわってきます。

Inukai Genpachi is one of the Eight Dog Warriors in Kyokutei Bakin’s Nanso Satomi Hakkenden. The sacred jewel he bears is inscribed with shin, meaning “faith” or “trust.” In Inoue’s Shin Hakkenden, a hero from the Edo period is reborn in present-day Boso, merging with the culture and lives passed down in the region.
犬飼現八いぬかいげんぱちは、曲亭馬琴きょくていばきんの『南総里見八犬伝なんそうさとみはっけんでん』に登場とうじょうする八犬士はっけんしの一人ひとりで、霊玉れいぎょくに刻きざまれた文字もじは「信しん」。井上いのうえ氏しの「シン・八犬伝はっけんでん」では、江戸時代えどじだいの英雄えいゆうが現代げんだいの房総ぼうそうによみがえり、その地ちに受うけ継つがれる文化ぶんかと人々ひとびとの営いとなみに重かさなります。

In Chiba Prefecture, fishing is prohibited from June through July to protect Japanese spiny lobsters during their spawning season, and reopens on August 1. Fishermen set their nets in the evening and haul up the lobsters caught in them the following morning. Reading the waves and currents, they carefully free each lobster from the net without damaging its long antennae or legs.
千葉県ちばけんでは、産卵期さんらんきの伊勢海老いせえびを守まもるため、6月がつから7月がつまで漁りょうが禁きんじられ、8月がつ1日ついたちに解禁かいきんされます。漁師りょうしたちは夕方ゆうがたに海うみへ網あみを仕掛しかけ、翌朝よくあさ、網あみにかかった伊勢海老いせえびを引ひき上あげます。大おおきな波なみや潮しおの流ながれを読よみながら、長ながい触角しょっかくや脚あしを傷きずつけないよう、一匹いっぴきずつ丁寧ていねいに網あみから外はずしていきます。

In Futomi, Kamogawa City, cotton-thread nets made from natural materials have been used for more than a century. They require more work than nylon nets and catch fewer lobsters, but they help prevent overfishing and cause less damage to seaweed. To receive the sea’s bounty while preserving its life for the future—this reflects the spirit of fishermen who seek not to conquer nature, but to live alongside it.
鴨川市かもがわし太海ふとみでは、100年以上ねんいじょうにわたり、天然素材てんねんそざいで作つくられた綿糸網めんしあみが使つかわれてきました。ナイロン網あみより手間てまがかかり、伊勢海老いせえびもかかりにくい一方いっぽう、獲とり過すぎを防ふせぎ、海藻かいそうを傷きずつけにくいといいます。海うみの恵めぐみを得えながら、その命いのちを未来みらいへ残のこす。そこには、自然しぜんを征服せいふくするのではなく、共ともに生いきようとする漁師りょうしたちの心こころがあります。

This issue’s Japan Savvy features saury, which arrives in the waters around Japan in autumn. Having grown in the food-rich northern seas and stored up fat over the summer, saury is an autumn harvest delivered by the sea. At a table set with salt-grilled saury and freshly cooked new rice, the bounty of the sea and the fields comes together.
本号ほんごうのJapan Savvyでは、秋あきに日本近海にほんきんかいへやってくる秋刀魚さんまを取とり上あげています。夏なつの間あいだ、餌えさの豊ゆたかな北きたの海うみで育そだち、脂あぶらを蓄たくわえた秋刀魚さんまは、海うみから届とどく秋あきの実みのりです。塩焼しおやきの秋刀魚さんまと炊たきたての新米しんまいが並ならぶ食卓しょくたくには、海うみと田たの恵めぐみが一ひとつに重かさなります。

Fertile soil nourished by volcanoes, nuts and wild mountain vegetables growing in the hills, and fish gathering where warm and cold currents meet—the Japanese archipelago is blessed with the bounty of both sea and mountain. People have long received life from nature while respecting its power and protecting it. Genpachi’s “faith” also echoes the hearts of fishermen who trust the sea and carry their inherited skills and its bounty into the future.
火山かざんが育そだてた肥沃ひよくな大地だいち、山やまに実みのる木きの実みや山菜さんさい、暖流だんりゅうと寒流かんりゅうが出会であう海うみに集あつまる魚さかなたち。海山うみやまの幸さちに恵めぐまれた日本列島にほんれっとうで、人々ひとびとは自然しぜんから命いのちをいただき、その力ちからを畏おそれ、守まもりながら生いきてきました。現八げんぱちの「信しん」は、海うみを信しんじ、受うけ継ついだ技わざと恵めぐみを未来みらいへつなぐ漁師りょうしたちの心こころにも重かさなります。
