A New Pinnacle of Lunar Landing: Pinpoint Landing – 月面着陸の新たな頂点：ピンポイント着陸

「この10年のうちに人を月に送り、無事地球に帰還させる」。

This is a passage from a speech given by US President John F. KENNEDY in 1961.

これは、米国大統領ジョン・F・ケネディーが1961年に行った演説の一節です。

 Those words became a reality with the success of the Apollo program and marked a significant step in the history of human space exploration.

その言葉はアポロ計画の成功で実現し、人類の宇宙探査の歴史において重要な一歩となりました。

 Times are advancing, and technology continues to evolve.

時代は進み、技術は進化し続けています。

 On January 20, 2024, JAXA, Japan’s leading aerospace development agency, successfully carried out a groundbreaking mission with the unmanned probe “SLIM.”

2024年1月20日、日本の口腔宇宙開発を担うJAXAは、無人探査機「SLIM」による画期的なミッションを成功させました。

It achieved not only a landing on the lunar surface but also a “pinpoint landing” at a predetermined location.

単に月面に着陸するだけでなく、あらかじめ定められた地点への「ピンポイント着陸」を実現したのです。

On the moon, there are about 15 recognized flat areas called “sea” on the near side alone.

月には「海」と呼ばれる平地が、表側だけでも15ほど認識されています。

This time, SLIM aimed for a crater near the “Mare Nectaris.”

今回SLIMが目指したのは、「神酒の海」の近くにあるクレーターです。

This crater was named “Shiori (Bookmark)” to serve as a bookmark sandwiched between the chapters of humanity’s space exploration story.

このクレーターは人類の宇宙探査の物語に挟まれる栞となるよう「栞」と名付けられました。

With pinpoint landing technology, scientists can investigate more specific locations.

ピンポイント着陸技術により、科学者たちはより具体的な地点を調査することが可能となります。

Lunar landing is an ongoing challenge, with yet unseen pages awaiting beyond.

月面着陸は現在進行形の挑戦であり、その先にはまだ見ぬページが待っています。
