今年4月に、鳥取県大山町で「ティラノサウルスレース大山2023」が開催されました。
- Over 200 “tyrannosaurs” from all over Japan competed to see how fast they could run.
全国から集まった200以上の「ティラノサウルス」が、走る速さを競いました。
- When asked why people come to the event, KAWAMOTO Naoki from the Japan Tyrannosaurus Preservation Society answered:
どうして人が集まるのかという質問に対して、日本ティラノサウルス保存会の川本直樹さんはこう答えました。
- “I think a lot of people want to be Tyrannosaurus. Also, people might be tired. They might be thinking that they can’t take humans anymore.”
「ティラノサウルスになりたい人が多いんじゃないでしょうか。それと、みんな疲れてるのかな。人間なんかやってられるかと思っているのかもしれませんね。」
- The event was originally born in the United States. Since 2022, it has been held in various locations in Japan.
もともとアメリカで生まれたイベントで、2022年から日本でも各地で開催されています。

Using Cat Photos to Scare Off Pigeons!?
ネコの写真でハト対策！？In Shinjuku suffering from pigeon damage, a slightly unusual countermeasure is a hot topic.
ハト被害に悩む新宿で、ちょっと変わった対策が話題です。
Installed at stations and in the city are photos of cats baring their fangs.
駅や街なかに設置されたのは、牙をむき出しにしたネコの写真。
Moreover, their eyes shine brightly, and they glare at the pigeons.
しかも目はキラリと光り、ハトをにらみつけます。
They seem to have tried photos of snakes and owls too, but the most effective one was the cat.
ヘビやフクロウの写真も試したそうですが、いちばん効果があったのはネコでした。
That reputation spread outside of Shinjuku too, but there are also figures of pigeons relaxing calmly in front of the photos.
その評判は新宿の外にも広がりましたが、写真の前で平然とくつろぐハトの姿も。
The battle of wits between people and pigeons seems to continue still.

A Japanese macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Chiba Prefecture is gathering attention domestically and internationally.
千葉県の市川市動植物園のニホンザルが、国内外で注目を集めています。
His name is ‘Punch’. He is a male born in July 2025.
名前は「パンチ」。2025年7月生まれのオスです。
He was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, and was raised by artificial rearing.
生後まもなく母親に育児放棄され、人工哺育で育ちました。
At that time, a stuffed orangutan was given as a substitute for his mother.
その際、母親代わりとしてオランウータンのぬいぐるみが与えられました。
Punch shows strong attachment to it, and is hugging and carrying it around.
パンチはそれに強い愛着を示し、抱いたり持ち歩いたりしています。
In January 2026, he joined the original troop of the monkey mountain.
2026年1月、本来のサル山の群れに合流しました。
Currently he lives in the troop together with the stuffed toy and is learning involvement with other monkeys.
現在はぬいぐるみとともに群れで暮らし、他のサルとの関わりを学んでいます。
That brave figure spread on SNS, and is a hot topic around the world saying, ‘I am struck in my heart’ and ‘I want to cheer for him’.
その健気な姿がSNSで広まり、「心を打たれる」「応援したい」と世界中で話題です。

Hakone’s Iconic Retro Train to Be Retired
箱根の名物レトロ車両、引退へ
The mountain railway running through Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture has train cars that have been used for over 100 years.
神奈川県・箱根を走る登山電車には、100年以上使われてきた車両があります。
They are “Moha 1” and “Moha 2.”
それが「モハ1形」と「モハ2形」です。
Among them, the “Moha 1” began operation in 1919.
中でも「モハ1形」は1919年に運行を開始しました。
As a regularly operating train, it is considered the oldest in Japan.
定期運行している電車としては、日本で最も古いとされています。
However, due to aging, repairs and securing parts have become difficult, and it has been announced that it will retire in January 2028.
しかし、老朽化により修理や部品の確保が難しくなり、2028年1月で引退することが発表されました。
Voices expressing regret at parting with the train, which has carried many people for many years and has been loved as a “retro train car,” are spreading.
長年、多くの人を運び、「レトロ車両」として親しまれてきた電車との別れを惜しむ声が広がっています。

The Kanji That Represents the Mood of Society in 2025
2025年の世相を表す漢字
The 2025 “Kanji of the Year” was announced at Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto.
2025年の「今年の漢字」が、京都の清水寺で発表されました。
The kanji of the year, written on a large sheet of Japanese paper, is “bear.”
大きな和紙に書かれた、今年の漢字は「熊」です。
One reason it was chosen is that bear-related damage occurred repeatedly across the country.
選ばれた理由には、全国で熊による被害が相次いだことがあります。
Another reason is that pandas were returned to China.
また、パンダが中国に返還されたことも、理由の一つです。
The “Kanji of the Year” is decided each year through public submissions.
「今年の漢字」は、毎年、一般からの応募によって決まります。
“Bear” received the highest number of votes, totaling 23,346.
「熊」は、最多となる2万3346票を集めました。
Second place went to “rice,” which became a topic due to rising prices, with a difference of only 180 votes.
2位は、価格高騰で話題になった「米」で、その差はわずか180票でした。
The “Kanji of the Year” began in 1995. This is the first time that “bear” has been selected.
1995年に始まった「今年の漢字」。 「熊」が選ばれたのは、今回が初めてです。

Who Is This Year’s ‘Lucky Man’? Nishinomiya Shrine’s ‘Running Worship’
今年の福男は誰？西宮神社の「走り参り」Every year on January 10th, the ‘Gate-Opening Ritual Lucky Man Selection’ is held at Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo Prefecture.
毎年1月10日に、兵庫県の西宮神社で「開門神事福男選び」が行われます。
This place is known as a shrine that enshrines ‘Ebisu-sama’, the god of business prosperity.
ここは、商売繁盛の神様「えびす様」を祀る神社として知られています。
The worshipers aiming for ‘Lucky Man’ run all at once toward the main hall, about 230 meters away from the gate.
福男を目指す参拝者たちは、門から約230メートル離れた本殿へ一斉に走ります。
At 6:00 AM, at the moment the gate opens, they start.
午前6時、門が開いた瞬間にスタート。
A powerful scene of sprinting at full speed unfolds.
全力疾走の迫力ある光景が広がります。
The top three people who arrive at the main hall first are certified as that year’s ‘Lucky Men’.
最初に本殿に到着した上位3人が、その年の「福男」に認定されます。
The name of the event is “Fuku-otoko” (Lucky Man), but of course women can participate as well.
行事名は「福男」ですが、もちろん女性も参加できます。
Who will grasp the ‘luck’ this year? Every year, it attracts great attention.
今年は誰が“福”をつかむのか――毎年、大きな注目を集めています。

Halloween in the Sand Dunes!? Tottori’s Unique Party
ハロウィーンは砂丘で！？鳥取のユニークなパーティー
Regarding Halloween, congestion and trouble sometimes become problems in urban areas.
ハロウィーンは、都市部では混雑やトラブルが問題になることもあります。
Amidst that situation, Tottori Prefecture held an event at the Tottori Sand Dunes, saying, ‘Let’s have fun at the spacious sand dunes!’
そんな中、鳥取県は「広々とした砂丘で楽しもう！」と、鳥取砂丘でイベントを開催しました。
The slogan was ‘Trick or Tottreat’.
合言葉は「トリック・オア・トットリート」。
Approximately 2,800 people dressed in costumes paraded on the sand dunes, and the venue was very lively.
仮装した約2800人が砂丘をパレードし、会場は大にぎわい。
This year, ‘Myaku-Myaku,’ the character for the Osaka-Kansai Expo, and idols from Tottori also appeared, and livened up the event.
今年は、大阪・関西万博のキャラクター「ミャクミャク」や鳥取出身のアイドルも登場し、イベントを盛り上げました。
That liveliness also became a big topic on social media.
そのにぎわいはSNSでも大きな話題になりました。
Tottori Prefecture is aiming to become the ‘sacred place of Halloween’.
鳥取県は“ハロウィーンの聖地”を目指しています。
