These days in Japan, “oshi-katsu” — supporting your favorite person or character —is extremely popular.

今、日本では好きな人やキャラクターを応援する「推し活」が大人気です。

Recently, more and more people are engaging in oshi-katsu even for “sumo,” which is often called Japan’s “national sport.”

最近では、日本の“国技”とも呼ばれる「相撲」でも、推し活をする人が増えています。

In the past, sumo fans were mostly older people.

以前は、相撲のファンは年配の人が多く見られました。

But today, the number of young female fans is also increasing.

しかし、今は若い女性のファンも増えています。

Women who love sumo are called “Su-jo” (short for sumo joshi).

相撲が好きな女性は、「スー女」と呼ばれています。

Oshi-katsu isn’t just about watching sumo.

推し活は、ただ相撲を見るだけではありません。

Fans enjoy buying goods like towels or acrylic stands of their favorite sumo wrestlers, ​​or making their own paper fan.

好きな力士のタオルやアクリルスタンドなどのグッズを買ったり、うちわを手作りしたりして楽しみます。

Traditional sumo is showing new excitement through the power of oshi-katsu.

伝統ある相撲が、推し活の力で新たな盛り上がりを見せています。

Giant Animals Appear After the Harvest: Amazing Wara (Straw) Art in Niigata!

収穫後に現れる巨大動物。新潟のわらアートがすごい！

Niigata City: A major agricultural city that boasts the largest rice production volume in Japan.

日本一の米の生産量を誇る大農業都市・新潟市。

Even among them, Nishikan Ward is known as one of Japan’s leading rice-growing regions.

その中でも西蒲区は、日本有数の稲作地帯として知られています。

Here, after the rice harvest, art sculptures are made from ‘wara’ (rice straw) collected from the surrounding rice fields.

ここでは、稲刈りのあと、周囲の田んぼから集めた「わら」でアート作品が作られます。

Every year, giant straw sculptures of dinosaurs and animals are displayed in Uwasekigata Park, and it bustles with large crowds.

毎年、上堰潟公園には恐竜や動物の巨大なわらアートが並び、多くの人でにぎわいます。

The sculptures are produced through a collaboration between local university students and artisans.

作品は、地元の大学生や職人たちが協力して制作。

As a unique event where agriculture and art have merged, it is attracting attention from home and abroad.

農業とアートが融合したユニークなイベントとして、国内外から注目を集めています。

It is another ‘harvest,’ born amidst the landscape where people grow rice.

お米を育てる風景の中に生まれる、もうひとつの「実り」です。

The Osaka-Kansai Expo, which began in April, will reach its final day on October 13.

4月に始まった大阪・関西万博は、10月13日に最終日を迎えます。

Discussions are now underway on how the venue will be reused.

今、会場をどのように再利用するか、議論が行われています。

Among the ideas, particular attention is on the “Grand Ring.”

中でも注目されているのが「大屋根リング」。

It is the symbol of this Expo, with a circumference of about 2 kilometers.

今回の万博のシンボルであり、一周の大きさは約2キロです。

This Grand Ring has been recognized by Guinness World Records as “the world’s largest wooden architectural structure.”

この大屋根リングは「世界最大の木造建築物」として、ギネス世界記録にも認定されました。

After the Expo, considerations are underway with the aim of leaving part of it in a form people can climb.

万博後は、一部を人が登れる形で残すことを目指して、検討が進められています。

However, there are also voices calling for the entire structure to remain, and attention is focusing on its future.

しかし、全部を残してほしいという声もあり、その行方に注目が集まっています。

Rice Fields as Canvas!? Spectacular “Tanbo Art”

田んぼがキャンバス！？迫力満点の「田んぼアート」

From summer to autumn, “Tanbo art (rice field art)” reaches its peak viewing season across Japan.

夏から秋にかけて、全国各地で「田んぼアート」が見頃を迎えます。

In Japan, once you leave the cities, rice field scenery spreads out all around in every region.

日本では、都会を離れると、どの地方でもあたり一面に田んぼの風景が広がります。

Tanbo art is to use those rice fields as a canvas and draw pictures or characters using rice plants of different colors.

その田んぼをキャンバスにして、色のちがう稲で絵や文字を描くのが「田んぼアート」です。

One of the most famous examples is in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.

なかでも有名なのが、埼玉県行田市。

Every year, a vast rice field of about 2.8 hectares reveals art that looks just like a painting.

毎年、約2.8ヘクタールの広大な田んぼに、まるで絵画のようなアートが浮かび上がります。

In 2015, it was certified by Guinness World Records as the “largest Tanbo art in the world.”

2015年には、「世界最大の田んぼアート」としてギネス世界記録にも認定されました。

It is a form of art unique to Japan, where rice is a staple food.

米を主食とする、日本ならではのアートです。

December 12 is “Kanji Day,” a commemorative day established by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation.
12月12日は、日本漢字能力検定協会が制定した「漢字の日」です。

On this day, the chief priest of Kiyomizu Temple (located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto), Mori Seihan, who holds the highest-ranking position [Kanju or Kansu] in the Tendai sect, writes and announces the “Kanji of the Year®.” This single character symbolizes the social climate of the year and is written on a large piece of Japanese paper.
この日、清水寺（京都市東山区）貫主（天台宗の僧職最高位）の森清範さんが、その年の世相を象徴する「今年の漢字®」を大きな和紙に書き、発表します。

On this day, the chief priest (Kansu) of Kiyomizu Temple (located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto), Mori Seihan, writes and announces the “Kanji of the Year®,” a single character that represents the social climate of the year, on a large piece of Japanese paper.
この日、清水寺（京都市東山区）の僧侶の最高位(貫主)である森清範さんが、その年の世相を象徴する「今年の漢字®」を大きな和紙に書き、発表します。

For 2024, the “Kanji of the Year®” chosen with the highest number of votes is “金” (gold).
2024年の「今年の漢字®」には、応募総数最多の票で「金」が選ばれました。

The reasons for this selection include the achievement of gold medals at the Paris Olympics, the issuance of new banknotes, political corruption scandals involving illicit money, and robbery cases motivated by monetary gain through underground jobs.
パリ五輪での金メダル、新紙幣発行、政治家の裏金問題、闇バイトによる強盗事件などが理由に挙げられています。

Mori, who is also a war veteran, has expressed his wish to one day write the kanji “和” (harmony/peace) to symbolize peace.
戦争経験者でもある森さんは、いずれ書きたいのは平和の「和」だと語っています。

The Charm of Osaka Conveyed Through Kabuki | 歌舞伎で伝える大阪の魅力

The Osaka-Kansai Expo will be held starting April 13.
大阪・関西万博が4月13日から開催されます。

In preparation for the Expo, a project is currently underway to convey the charms of Osaka’s culture and arts.
万博に向けて現在、大阪の文化や芸術の魅力を発信するプロジェクトが進行中です。

A special Kabuki performance will be held in February as part of these projects. This follows last year’s performance, and Governor YOSHIMURA Hirofumi said, “I hope people of all generations will see this performance.”
その一つとして、2月に歌舞伎の特別公演が行われます。昨年に続いての開催で、吉村洋文府知事は「いろいろな世代の人に観てほしい」と話しました。

The Kabuki program will feature plays mainly connected to the Kansai region.
歌舞伎の演目は、関西にゆかりのあるものを中心に上演します。

Additionally, the Expo will feature “Cho-Kabuki” with the popular virtual singer “HATSUNE Miku,” attracting attention from around the world.
また、万博では、人気のバーチャルシンガー「初音ミク」が出演する「超歌舞伎」が上演予定で、世界からも注目を集めています。

At the Izu Shaboten Zoo in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, about 1,500 species of cacti and succulents are on display.
静岡県伊東市の伊豆シャボテン動物公園では、約1,500種類のサボテンや多肉植物が展示されています。

Every autumn, the “Interesting Cactus Competition” is held here.
ここでは毎年秋に「おもしろサボテン品評会」が開催されます。

10 particularly unique plants, including rare cacti and secret specimens not usually displayed to the public, are exhibited, and a popularity vote is conducted.
普段は公開されていない秘蔵の植物や珍しいサボテンから10株を披露し、人気投票を行います。

The event also includes entertaining commentary from the famous staff member, Mr. Manabe, known as the “Cactus Doctor,” who has 34 years of experience growing cacti.
生育歴34年の”サボテン博士”としておなじみの名物スタッフ、真鍋[ルビ：まなべ]さんによるユニークな解説も人気です。

Last year’s popularity vote attracted more than 10,000 votes.
昨年の人気投票では1万票以上が集まりました。

A writer aiming to become an author moves to a village: “The Hidden Village Writer.”
村に移住して作家を目指す「秘境の文筆家」

A “hidden village writer” has taken up a post in Shiiba Village, Miyazaki Prefecture. This village is considered one of Japan’s three most secluded regionssts.
宮崎県椎葉村に「秘境の文筆家」が着任しました。この村は「日本三大秘境」の一つとされています。

This project invites individuals aspiring to become novelists to move to Shiiba Village as members of a regional revitalization team, where they engage in various activities. Four individuals were selected from 92 applicants.
これは、小説家デビューを目指す人が地域おこし協力隊として椎葉村に移住し、活動するプロジェクトです。92人の応募者から4人が選ばれました。

They live in houses provided by the village, receive a monthly salary, and can spend up to three years writing novels. Naoki Prize-winning author Shogo Imamura and editors will support them in their writing endeavors.
彼らは村が用意した家に住み、月給をもらいながら最大3年間小説を執筆します。直木賞作家の今村翔吾さんや編集者が作品作りを支援します。

In the near future, a new author might emerge from this secluded region.
近い将来、秘境から新しい作家が生まれるかもしれません。

[News Review – September 2024 Issue]

In the Atami hot springs of Shizuoka Prefecture, there is a local mascot and regional PR character called “Atsuo.”
静岡県の熱海温泉には、地域をPRするご当地キャラ「あつお」というゆるキャラがいます。

Mascot characters are often cute animals or women, but Atsuo resembles a middle-aged man.
ゆるキャラは動物や女性など愛らしい姿であることが多いですが、あつおの見た目はおじさんです。

When he was young, he was mesmerized by the Atami hot springs during a company trip. Before he knew it, he became a fairy and settled in Atami, eventually taking on his current form.
若い頃に社員旅行で訪れた熱海温泉に魅せられ、気がつけば妖精になって熱海に住みつき、年月を経て今の姿になりました。

He looks like a middle-aged man but has the heart of a maiden, making him a unique mascot character with genderless charm.
姿はおじさま、心は乙女。ジェンダーレスなかわいさを持つユニークなゆるキャラです。
