  • Shrines and Temples Purchase Problem and Japanese People’s Identity

Shrines and Temples Purchase Problem and Japanese People’s Identity

News that ‘Japanese shrines and temples are being bought by foreigners’ has been reported in the overseas media and is causing a stir.

The view was introduced that ‘those who wish to purchase are not aiming for noble purposes, but are targeting tax evasion and money laundering by abusing tax incentives’.

For religious corporations, income is non-taxable, and there are preferential treatments where property tax and inheritance tax are also exempted.

It is said that one wealthy Chinese individual spoke shamelessly, saying, ‘There is no business as lucrative as a religious corporation’.

The realm of faith, which severs worldly desires, is, ironically, being swallowed up by desire.

However, the root of this problem also lies with the Japanese temple side, which becomes the seller.

Temples that have become impoverished due to a lack of successors and a decrease in parishioners are being unavoidably forced into selling.

This problem, which relates to the national identity, could have been prevented if there had been political foresight and a national vision.

Also, within postwar democratic education, the religious faith of the Japanese people became diluted, and a spiritual vacuum spread.

Many Japanese people treat shrines and temples as ‘power spots,’ and have fallen into a way of thinking centered on selfish desires.

Might it not be the case that such an attitude is allowing the ‘commodification’ of Japan’s ‘soul’ by foreigners?

This problem also has the aspect of ‘happened because it was bound to happen.’

Perhaps this current event might need to be regarded as a turning point to reconstruct Japan’s religious culture and spiritual foundation.

  • The Much-Talked-About Film Kokuho —— The World of Kabuki Where Art and Blood Intersect

[Close up Japan – October 2025 Issue]

The Much-Talked-About Film Kokuho —— The World of Kabuki Where Art and Blood Intersect

The film ‘Kokuho,’ which depicts the life story of a Kabuki actor, is a hot topic.

The box office revenue surpassed 10 billion yen, and it became a magnificent achievement—the first for a live-action film in 22 years—in a recent era dominated by anime.

Despite being a long film of 3 hours, this work is captivating audiences with an entertaining quality that makes one forget the time.

The original author, Shuichi Yoshida, went backstage for three years for his writing and thoroughly experienced the world of Kabuki.

Also, what supported the film’s high quality was the training that the busy actors repeated over approximately a year and a half.

That accumulated effort extends even to their bearing and gaze, and reproduces the stylistic beauty of Kabuki.

What is at the center of the story is the world of Kabuki, where blood relations and art intricately intertwine.

Kabuki is a hereditary traditional art, and being born into a prestigious family is a privilege and is also a heavy destiny.

On the other hand, for those without the bloodline, a high wall stands in the way, even if they have talent.

‘Kokuho’ brings human anguish and passion to the surface, as people who bear the burden of art and blood intersect with one another.

The director is Mr. Lee Sang-il, who has lived in Japanese society as a Zainichi Korean.

The figure of the protagonist, who dives into the Kabuki world with talent as his weapon, also overlaps with the experiences of the director himself, who is successful in the Japanese film industry.

In Kabuki, the ‘onnagata’—men who play female roles—was established in the 17th century, as a result of the Edo shogunate banning women from the stage.

While being a story about actors, this film is also a rare work that reflects the uniqueness of Japanese traditional performing arts.

Japan, the Earthquake Nation — Shaken Hearts, Uncertain Tomorrows

According to the current tally of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, the number of islands that exist in Japan is stated as 14,125.

Recently, earthquakes have been occurring one after another in the Tokara Islands, the southern tip of such an ‘island nation’ as Japan, located in Kyushu’s Kagoshima Prefecture.

From the end of June 2024, earthquakes occurred frequently, and in July, the number exceeded 2,200.

Many seismologists exist in Japan, and, for example, they are predicting that the Nankai Trough earthquake has an ‘80% probability of occurring within the next 30 years’.

‘Trough’ means ‘the bottom of a boat’ in English, and plate tectonics, which centers on the movement of seabed plates, is the basis of current earthquake prediction.

However, there are also criticisms on the grounds that many major earthquakes, including the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, could not be predicted.

In recent years, a theory called ‘plume tectonics,’ which focuses on the flow of heat in the underground mantle, has also been attracting attention.

Currently, Mt. Shinmoedake in Kagoshima is erupting, and there are also voices calling for the necessity of ‘heat flow monitoring’.

Between the Tokara Islands and Kyushu, there is a giant submarine volcano called the ‘Kikai Caldera’.

There is also a theory that this volcano caused a massive eruption approximately 7,300 years ago and made the Jomon people of that time migrate all over Japan, and even to various parts of the world.

A rumor that ‘a great disaster will occur on July 5, 2025’ spread, sparked by a ‘prophecy’ depicted in a single manga.

As it turned out, that day passed safely, but the importance of preparing for an emergency, such as “stockpiling” and “confirming evacuation sites,” does not change.

New Banknotes Incorporating the Pinnacle of Cutting-Edge Technology

On July 3, 2024, Japan issued new banknotes for the first time in 20 years. These new banknotes incorporate cutting-edge modern technology that sets them apart from previous ones.

For the new portraits, notable figures who contributed to Japan’s modernization were selected. The 10,000-yen note features Eiichi Shibusawa, the creator of modern Japanese society; the 5,000-yen note features Umeko Tsuda, a pioneer of women’s education; and the 1,000-yen note features Shibasaburo Kitasato, the father of modern Japanese medicine.

The new 1,000-yen note features a straight “1,” while the new 10,000-yen note has a “1” with a curved tip, making it easier to identify. This design is part of a universal approach that considers both visual and tactile aspects.

Furthermore, to prevent counterfeiting, the banknotes feature intricate continuous patterns and high-precision watermarks, utilizing traditional Japanese paper techniques.

Additionally, the new banknotes feature stripe-shaped hologram technology, where the portrait rotates in 3D depending on the viewing angle. This marks the first time such technology has been used in banknotes worldwide.

Amid the global trend toward cashless transactions, Japan has deliberately chosen to issue new banknotes.

  • Can Japanese culture “save humanity’s end”!?

Can Japanese culture “save humanity’s end”!? –

[Nihongo Spirit – April 2024 Issue]

The “Doomsday Clock,” regularly published by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in the United States, pointed to “90 seconds” in 2023.

This parallels humanity’s doomsday to midnight, signifying the time until that end as “remaining seconds.”

Now, around the world, a movement is spreading among young people who choose not to have children, motivated by the desire not to subject them to crises like climate change.

Politicians aim to win elections by proposing policies to help the poor now, rather than addressing future crises.

In reality, it’s the powerful individuals and politicians colluding with the wealthy who are causing suffering for the poor.

However, people caught up in daily life often support them as saviors.

Politicians, building their power on the support of the poor, can become dictatorial, and when power becomes too concentrated, they may even plunge the country into destruction due to delusions.

Such history has repeated itself many times over, and it seems poised to repeat once more.

Rather than the qualities of the politicians themselves, isn’t it the responsibility of the citizens who fail to discern them?

While Japanese people possess a spirit of compassion toward others, they believed they were fighting for their own country’s interests when wars with foreign nations broke out.

After the defeat in the war, Japan reconstructed its economy and eventually became known as a cultural superpower.

Now is the time for Japan to acknowledge its historical facts, reflect upon them, and advocate for world peace through culture.

A New Pinnacle of Lunar Landing: Pinpoint Landing

A New Pinnacle of Lunar Landing: Pinpoint Landing –

[Close Up Japan – April 2024 Issue]

“Send humans to the moon within the next 10 years and safely return them to Earth.”

This is a passage from a speech given by US President John F. KENNEDY in 1961.

Those words became a reality with the success of the Apollo program and marked a significant step in the history of human space exploration.

Times are advancing, and technology continues to evolve.

On January 20, 2024, JAXA, Japan’s leading aerospace development agency, successfully carried out a groundbreaking mission with the unmanned probe “SLIM.”

It achieved not only a landing on the lunar surface but also a “pinpoint landing” at a predetermined location.

On the moon, there are about 15 recognized flat areas called “sea” on the near side alone.

This time, SLIM aimed for a crater near the “Mare Nectaris.”

This crater was named “Shiori (Bookmark)” to serve as a bookmark sandwiched between the chapters of humanity’s space exploration story.

With pinpoint landing technology, scientists can investigate more specific locations.

Lunar landing is an ongoing challenge, with yet unseen pages awaiting beyond.
