“Ohayou gozaimasu” is generally used up until around 10 a.m., after that in the daytime “Konnichiwa,” and after sunset “Konbanwa” are used.
To express your appreciation to a person for the continued business, you should say “Itsumo osewa ni natte orimasu” (I appreciate all you’ve done for us).
It’s more common to change the expression to “Osewa ni narimasu,” when addressing a person you’ve met for the first time.
In fact, even if you haven’t had any dealings with, or when you don’t know how you are connected to a person, you can still say “Osewa ni narimasu” or “Osewa ni natte orimasu.”
When entering a reception room on a visit, or you sit on a chair, you should say “Shitsurei itashimasu.” This creates a good impression.
“Shitsurei itashimasu.” is also used when serving tea, handing over documents, leaving your seat, and exiting a room.
When bowing, stand up straight facing the person and put both your hands together in front of your body, or put your arms at your sides and stretch your fingers straight.
With your back straight, incline your body forwards.
The angle of your body has meaning.
Before and after bowing, you should look into the eyes of the other person.
When you incline your body at a 15 degree angle this is a casual greeting used for when you walk past somebody, when tea is served, etc.
A standard bow is 30 degrees and is used for greetings such as “Irasshaimase,” “Konnichiwa,” and “Arigatou gozaimasu.”
To express thanks, or apologize with phrases such as, “Moushiwake gozaimasen deshita,” you should incline your body at a 45 degree angle.
You should incline your body at a 60 to 70 degree angle when apologizing in a public place for causing social upset, or to express your deep regret for a mistake.
In terms of timing for words and bowing, basically words come first and bowing later. You shouldn’t do them together.
