News about COVID-19 has been broadcast on the television every day from morning till night and newspapers, too, have reported on it extensively. During this period, various other news items, including politics, which should have been covered, have been given little attention, or not been reported on at all. Taking a different perspective, some say that the vanished news items were ones that would have no influence on citizens’ lives. On the other hand, with all branches of the media repeating the same information in the news, the attention of the population is focused in the same direction. For instance, if someone coughs in a crowded place, such as a train, that person is seen as being infected and those around them give them cold looks. In addition, promoters of sporting events and concerts are afraid of danger and criticism when some participants are infected, and therefore have to cancel those events. No one can complain about the focus of the news at a time like this, if it is said to be necessary in order to protect citizens. However, on the other hand, some people have taken steps to exclude those who haven’t been infected on the grounds of race or nationality. In the past, the media has often been used by influential people to attack specific groups, with disastrous results. The really scary thing about all the turmoil surrounding the pandemic is that it makes clear the danger posed by militant world leaders who, aware of the power of this virus, develop biological weapons.
