Taking into account the merits of both parents, the term “double” has begun to be used in its place. Now, double athletes are the toast of Japan’s sports world. Up until now DARVISH Yu, who was born to an Iranian father, has been recognized for his contributions to major league baseball. Sumo wrestler TAKAYASU, who caused a stir recently when he was promoted to the rank of ozeki, has a Filipino mother. In addition, athletes Hakim SANI BRAWN and Aska CAMBRIDGE, judo wrestler BAKER Mashu, and tennis player OSAKA Naomi are well known. All have parents of different nationalities. They are all young and expected to win medals at the Tokyo Olympics. In recent years, there have been more and more international marriages, and it seems like the parents’ physical and latent capacities are reflected in their offspring’s genes. As a result, this has raised the bar for Japanese sporting records. The rise of these double athletes is changing not only the sports world, but also Japanese attitudes towards “doubles.”
