In August, Hamataro, a loggerhead turtle kept at the Hiwasa Sea Turtle Museum Caretta, celebrated his 71st birthday.
Hamataro is the world’s oldest recorded sea turtle in captivity.
To celebrate, he was presented with his favorite food: lobsters.
Minami Town, Tokushima Prefecture, where the museum is located, is known as a spawning ground for sea turtles, and has led the world in sea turtle research.
e research was started in 1950 by local junior high school students and their teachers, who also hatched Hamataro.
