Many middle schools and high schools in Japan require students to wear uniforms. Boys wear trousers and girls skirts. In recent years, more and more schools have adopted a gender-neutral approach, with the same designs available for boys and girls, or giving them the choice of wearing trousers or skirts. Irrespective of gender issues, many female students living in colder regions welcome being given the option of wearing trousers.
