A light is affixed to the roofs of taxis. The light comes on at night to indicate that the taxi is free. A red flashing light indicates that a suspicious character is onboard and that the driver would like those seeing it to call the police. To hail a cab on the street, look for a taxi displaying a 空車 kuusha (available) sign in its front window and raise your hand. When a taxi stops, the rear door automatically opens. If you have a large item of luggage, the driver will place it in the trunk for you. If one person sits in the front seat next to the driver, up to four people can ride in a standard sized taxi. You are required by law to fasten your seatbelt.
