This July an incident took place in the Ukraine in which a Malaysian Airlines airplane was shot down. The media reports concerning this incident were completely different in Russia and the West. The reality is that state controlled media reports are biased in favor of the government. Media reports have a huge influence on public opinion. In particular, opinion polls carried out by the media are accepted as being more credible. This May all major Japanese media carried out public opinion polls on whether people are in favor or opposed to the use of collective defense by changing the interpretation of the existing constitution. Since the results of these surveys differed greatly depending on the media outlet, their survey methods were examined. Asahi newspaper’s results showed 29 % in favor and 55% opposed; Mainichi newspaper showed 39% in favor and 54% opposed. On the other hand, the results of Yomiuri newspaper were 71％ in favor and 25% opposed and Sankei newspaper / FNN’s joint survey showed 70% in favor and 28% opposed. The answers to Asahi’s and Mainichi’s questions were either yes or no, while Yomiuri and Sankei / FNN added a third choice of: “It should only be used within limits.” As a result, 63% of people chose this limited use answer in Yomiuri poll and 59.4% in the Sankei / FEN poll. Counting those that chose this answer as being in favor, they reported that many people are in favor of collective self-defense. These reports almost completely tallied with these companies’ stance on collective defense. Yomiuri and Sankei / FEN phrased the question thus, “When a country that Japan has close relations with is attacked, Japan has the right to counterattack by viewing this as an attack on Japan. Meanwhile, Asahi and Mainichi are emphasizing the dangers involved in war. They phrased their question thus: “When an ally is attacked, Japan should have the right to fight alongside them by viewing this as an attack on Japan. Drawing conclusions from opinion polls that bring such results, many people have realized that the media has its own agenda.
