Protest Against the “Consent of Silence”

In February, MORI Yoshiro, President of the Tokyo Olympic Committee and Paralympic Games, made a remark that could be interpreted as being contemptuous to women, saying meetings with many female attendees would take too much time. While in office as Prime Minister, Mr. Mori once made a statement, before an election, in which he practically welcomed voting abstentions, saying he would like those uninterested in elections to say so and go to bed. Although Mr. Mori retracted his sexist comment and apologized, as his remark went against the Olympic Charter, which embraces gender equality, he continued to be roundly criticized. However, even though his comment had been called into question by the media, those concerned, including members of the committee, issued a series of statements in support of Mr. Mori remaining in office. This led to further criticism of the “village society mentality” within the organization. Mori’s sexist comment also drew strong criticism from abroad and he announced his resignation from the presidency. However, he was criticized again for surreptitiously trying to choose his own successor. In many countries of the world, the heads of government and those around them still play politics in such a way as to protect their own interests. People know this, but they keep their mouths shut. That’s the reality of the world. Jews who experienced internment in Auschwitz would tell Germans who said “we knew nothing,” “Yes, you knew. You just remained silent.”
