Kabuki is one of Japan’s most well-known forms of traditional entertainment, and yet it is always incorporating new elements.
In August, “Chou Kabuki” (Super Kabuki), in which a virtual idol (pop star) performed alongside kabuki actors, was held in Kyoto.
The audience got so fired up that they began not only shouting out the names of the real-live actors (as is traditional in kabuki), but also called out to the virtual images projected on the stage’s screen.
With members of the crowd waving around pen lights, it looked like the kind of scene you might witness at a pop concert.
Projects that combine traditional culture and technology are fast becoming a new phenomenon in Japan.
