Japan Takes on Global Warming

The world is now faced not only with the problem of Covid-19, but also with global warming. Last December, Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide pledged to meet the goal of reducing Japan’s green-house gas emissions to virtually zero by 2050. Accounting for over a quarter of the country’s electricity supply from the late 1980s to 2010, Japan relied on nuclear power as a clean energy source. However, after the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in 2011, this ratio dropped to 6.5% in 2019. As a result, the market share of thermal power from sources such as coal or natural gas is increasing and this is having an impact on global warming.
