China announced that from March they will stop importing pineapples produced in Taiwan because, according to them, harmful insects were found in the fruit. In response, many countries, including Japan, moved to support Taiwan. The supermarket has been flooded with enquiries from customers wanting to buy them in Japan, making it difficult to obtain Taiwanese pineapples. Many Japanese people felt that it was a way to show their gratitude to Taiwan for its generous support, including the generous donations made at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
