The rainy season in Japan lasts between June and July. This year, it rained heavily almost every day and the sun didn’t shine for a long time in many parts of Japan. This caused large-scale flooding in many places, most especially in Kyushu, and resulted in extensive damage. In the past volunteers were expected to help out in the affected areas. However, due to Covid-19, it became difficult to move around to clear up flood debris this time. In the middle of all this, a controversy arose over the pros and cons of flood control dams. Believing that dams are both damaging to the environment and unnecessary large-scale constructions, many have been suspended or postponed due to opposition from residentsand local governments.
