In July a scandal broke at Yoshimoto Kogyo Co., Ltd, a leading entertainment agency known for dealing mainly with comedians, that caused quite an uproar. It begun with a report by a weekly magazine claiming that 11 of Yoshimoto’s comedians took part in so called “underground business,” that is accepted work bypassing the company. Since these clients were deemed to have an “antisocial influence” (connections to organized crime), Yoshimoto announced that the entertainers involved would be punished with an indefinite suspension, however, this only created a new problem. In the beginning, two major comedians explained that they hadn’t taken a fee and were merely responding to requests from acquaintances without knowing thatthe clients were “antisocial groups.” After that, they confessed that they had received money and asked Yoshimoto if they could make a press statement to apologize, but Yoshimoto refused, saying it was too late. However, the two comedians were so strongly motivated to tell the truth and apologize to their fans as well as those involved that they voluntarily held a press conference. The two told their story with tears in theireyes. Many of those watching this on TV accepted their words and the focus moved on to Yoshimoto’s cooperate governance. Yoshimoto has about 6,000 entertainers and TV personalities on its books, however, some problems came to light including a lack of official contracts exchanged between comedians and the agency and a lack of transparency surrounding payments. All this upheaval has created an opportunity to discuss how ideal relations between entertainers and the agencies they belong to should be. On the other hand, some people criticize the media for its focus on entertainers’ private lives and scandals.
