The Japanese Population Continues to Shrink
In January 1 this year, the Japanese population was approximately 124.27 million, which was 505,000 less than last year. Reaching a peak in 2009, it has since continued to decrease for 11 years straight. Last year the number of Japanese births was approximately 867,000, while the number of deaths was 1,379,000. Only Tokyo, Kanagawa and Okinawa saw increases in their populations, while in all other regions there was a decline. On the other hand, the number of foreign residents in Japan was approximately 2,867,000, a figure that has increased six years in a row.
