Workout routines aimed at maintaining the physical fitness of Japanese citizens were instituted in 1928 and continue to this day.
Since it is practiced by listening to instructions on the radio, it is called “radio calisthenics.”
In the offices or factories of many companies, employees perform radio calisthenics before starting work.
In addition to radio calisthenics, “TV calisthenics” are also broadcast every morning.
My wife, who started doing TV workouts a few months ago, urged me “to try it for the sake of your health.”
I remembered radio workouts were held in a nearby park during summer vacations when I was an elementary school student.
Attendance was obligatory, but one way or another I always found a pretext to play truant.
Because of this, I declined, saying, “I’ll pass, as I probably won’t be able to keep at it.”
However, my wife tried to persuade me, by saying “the female instructors are very attractive and excercise is important.”
As my wife strongly urged me, I decided to begin.
From that day, I kept on with it, putting up with my sleepiness.
After a few days, my wife said she had a pain in her knee, and as a result she practiced the exercises sitting on a chair.
Fortunately, in TV calisthenics, for the benefit of those who cannot stand, one of the instructors practices sitting on a chair.
“This posture is much easier,” said my wife and she stopped doing the exercises standing up.
After a few weeks it seemed that her knee had healed and I told her, “now I think it’s time for you to do it standing up.”
“Well, but if it worsened that wouldn’t be good, I think I’ll refrain from intense physical exercise,” and so saying, my wife began restricting herself to the easy exercise routine while standing up.
After a while, she said, “If I only do this kind of easy calisthenics, it doesn’t have any effect, so until I’m completely healed, I’ll take a break,” and my exercise time became her tea time.
Before I knew it, my wife had become just like a coach, saying things like, “Your arms are crooked,” and “You should bend more deeply at the waist.”
