In April the mayor of Manazuru City, suddenly collapsed when he was making a speech in a sumo ring at an event held in Kyoto. Nurses in the audience quickly approached the ring to administer first aid. In sumo, it is customarily forbidden for women to enter the ring. Because of this, there was controversy over an announcement calling for the “women to please get down from the ring.” The Sumo Association apologized, saying that the person had been unnerved by the situation and failed to act appropriately. Because of this incident, many people are calling for the long-standing ban on women to be reviewed.
