Move to Register Jomon Ruins on the World Heritage List

The Japanese government has decided to recommend Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku – including ruins where the world’s oldest earthenware has been discovered – for registration on the World Cultural Heritage Site list. The sites consist of 17 ruins, including the remains of a large-scale village in Aomori Prefecture and of a stone circle in Akita Prefecture. They are expected to be considered for registration in the summer of 2021. As the excavation of the Jomon sites progresses, revealing artifacts produced by highly-skilled craftsmen, it is becoming clear that the Jomon people led full lives. Another thing of note is that none of the bones bear scars that appear to have been made in battle, nor have weapons been discovered.
