Hangan-biiki – Sympathy for the Underdog

This is a word that expresses sympathy or support for a person in a weak position. Hangan refers to the official title given to MINAMOTO no Yoshitsune by the court. He was the younger brother of MINAMOTO no Yoritomo, who was the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate (12th century), which was the first samurai regime. Yoshitsune was the warrior who destroyed the Heike clan, which had been vying for power with the Genji clan, and was most instrumental in paving the way for the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate regime. At that time, political power was concentrated with the emperor at the imperial court in Kyoto, but Yoritomo, who was supported by the warriors of Kanto, strengthened his control of his own domain. Yoritomo became angry with Yoshitsune for accepting the position at the Imperial Court in Kyoto without his permission, and destroyed him before he could bring disorder among the ranks of the samurai under his control. People sympathized with Yoshitsune’s tragic end. Later, many stories were written about him. In kabuki, movies and novels, he has been cast as a tragic hero. Siding with the underdog or hangan-biikiis said to be a sentiment that is unique to the Japanese and is often seen to this day at sports events and in TV dramas. However, it is sometimes used as a cautionary tale about not having the sense to understand the bigger picture. On the other hand, other people say that the interpretation of this story is up to the individual and that you shouldn’t impose your viewpoint on others.
