At the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February, the Japanese women’s ice skating team was highly praised. They won the gold medal in the women’s team speed skating pursuit. The Japanese team’s competitor in the final was a team from the Netherlands. Individually their abilities were much greater than the Japanese members’. So, the three members of the Japanese team synchronized their movements and maintained the same high speed for round corners. At the men’s 4x100 meter relay held at Rio de Janeiro, the Japanese team won the silver medal by passing on the baton without a hitch. In this way Japanese teams try to make up for a lack in individual ability through skill and teamwork.
