The Concept of an “Excellent CEO” Reevaluated by the Actions of Former Chairman C, GHOSN

Chairman Carlos Ghosn of Nissan Motor Company, the world-leading automobile manufacturer, was arrested as it was suspected that he was under-reporting his earnings to the tax office in November. His annual income from Nissan was about one billion yen. Later, he was arrested again for making Nissan pay for losses incurred from a personal investment failure. Ghosn also manages French automobile manufacturer Renault and Mitsubishi Motors, and his total annual income is said to be about three billion yen. Many Japanese people wonder why he is so obsessed with gaining more money in spite of receiving such a large income. However, some people say it is not too much from a global standpoint. He arrived at the company fresh from Renault in 1999, and is known for being a charismatic CEO who achieved a U-turn in Nissan’s fortunes during a management crisis. On the other hand he was said to be effective at reducing costs, dismissing more than 20,000 employees by closing factories and other methods. Some people say that many employees could have remained at the company if the income of directors had been reduced. Before globalization, in Japan, CEOs who lived comparatively frugally, thus enriching the livelihoods of employees were admired as great presidents. Today, CEOs who earn profits for the company (stockholders) by treating employees as disposable, are praised as being capable. His arrest raises questions about society and human beings in general; whether companies exist for the benefit of all, or whether the law of the jungle can be applied to human society.
