In 2016, students at Hiroshima Prefectural Yukiminami Senior High School came up with the idea of producing konnyaku (yam cake) in the shape of a Japanese giant salamander. The Japanese giant salamander is a national natural treasure, which is found in rivers throughout the prefecture. The following year, with the cooperation of konnyaku manufacturer Fujitoshi Foods, the students commercialized the product, which became so popular that production cannot keep up with the demand. The fish roe is kneaded to make it look more realistic, and the individual fingers of the Japanese giant salamander are reproduced one by one. It has become a hot topic on social media, with people commenting, “It’s too real to eat,” and “It’s grossly cute.”
