Leadership During Emergency Called into Question

As Covid-19 spreads across the globe, world leaders are scrambling to deal with it. Citizens are unable to leave their homes, and they are anxious over the resulting loss of income. In Japan, politicians have argued continually over economic intervention. Finally, in April, it was decided that a 100,000-yen payout would be given to each person including children and registered non-Japanese residents, however, citizens were dissatisfied with the slowness of this response. Despite it being a state of emergency, those working in government have not changed their mindset in respect to policy planning, revealing them to be completely out of touch with the man on the street. Because of losing World War II, Japan underwent even greater turmoil and transformation than during the Great Depression in 1929. The war completely changed the way Japanese people think. This emergency also led to changes. One of them is an increase in the numbers of corporations introducing telework. If teleworking becomes the norm, it has been predicted that the demand for transportation and office space would decrease, which will have a further significant impact on the food industry and also other industries. Former Prime Minister TANAKA Kakuei put forward a “Plan for Remodeling the Japanese Archipelago” in 1972. Though this great transformation of Japan was not carried out at that time, it’s likely to happen now in a different way. Up until now Japanese people have had a tendency to respect the establishment, however, they’re beginning to realize that their future depends on the leadership of their politicians. Whether or not this turmoil leads to a huge disaster or is an opportunity for major change, will be down to the leaders they choose.
