Up until the end of World War 2, Korea was annexed by Japan for 35 years, meaning that they were, together with Japan, made to fight with the allied nations. To finally resolve the issue for good, in 1965, Japan paid Korea a huge sum. But Korea is again demanding compensation claiming that individual compensation to comfort women and wartime laborers was not included in the treaty. If Korea’s demand is admitted, might China, which annexed Korea up until its independence at the end of the 19th century, also receive demands? Shouldn’t Western countries, that ruled over colonies, or the USA, that exploited slaves and indigenous populations, also respond to claims for compensation? This issue is not only between Japan and Korea.
