Ocha (Tea) Trivia

Ocha is a typical Japanese drink, and the largest area of production is in Shizuoka Prefecture. There are even some schools in Shizuoka that have ocha on tap. Nowadays, the room in which family members gather is called a living room, however, it used to be called a chanoma (tea room), since family members had tea in this room. A tea stalk floating upright in the tea cup is called a chabashira ga tatsu (standing tea stalk) and is a lucky omen. In addition, the phrase ocha wo nigosu (muddying the tea) is also often used. This means “giving an evasive answer.”
