A Full Marathon in Sandals? The Taiwanese Sandals Connecting Runners Across Japan

News Review - April 2025 Issue From October 26 to November 10, 2024, the “Everyone Taiwanese Sandal Marathon Online” was held. Since it was an online event, participants could join from anywhere in Japan, but there was one condition—they had to run in Taiwanese sandals. Taiwanese sandals are ultra-lightweight and offer excellent cushioning. Their soft, fluffy feel makes running comfortable and has gained popularity. In Japan, during the Edo period (17th to 19th century), “hikyaku” who delivered documents and goods quickly, wore lightweight straw sandals and ran for dozens of kilometers a day. Today, high-performance running shoes are mainstream, but perhaps one day, running in sandals will become common.
