Emergency Incident on a Train

Though Japanese trains run according to schedule, unforeseen circumstances can delay their arrival. One day, in a hurry to get home to watch a football game on TV, I took the special express train. About ten minutes after departure, a passenger suddenly shouted, “A person has collapsed! Somebody, press the emergency button please!” I was standing near a door, and the cry came from near the adjacent door. The train was jam packed with people returning home, so I could not see the person who had collapsed. The emergency button could not be found in the vicinity of the door close to me, and not knowing what to do, passengers were exchanging uneasy glances. To make matters worse, since the train was a special express, it would pass more than ten stations before the next stop. At that time, a man near me called someone on his mobile phone and explained the situation, desperately asking the person to inform the railroad company about the accident. However, the train continued to run at its normal speed. After some minutes had passed, there was an announcement inside the train: “A passenger has collapsed on this train, so the train will make an emergency stop at the nearest station.” I was relieved, but when the train arrived at the station, there was another announcement: “The doors will not open.” Then, only the adjacent door was opened, and the person was carried out on a waiting stretcher. Soon the door closed, and the train began to run as if the incident had not occurred. I said to the man who phoned, “You did a good job.” He said, “I only did what should have been done,” and started to read a book. Before arriving at the next station – the stop I was getting off at – there was another announcement. It said, “Because a passenger had to be rescued, the train will arrive one minute late.” Thanks to this speedy and commendable teamwork, I was able to watch the soccer broadcast from the start.
