In metropolitan areas many people use trains to commute. Because of this, trains get crowded and incidents involving groping sometimes occur. To stop this from happening, women only-cars were introduced by most railway companies around 2001. This February some men intentionally got on one of these carriages, creating a fuss with women shouting at them to get off. The men got angry and instead of getting off, pressed the emergency stop button to summon the police. They are members of a group that insists designating certain carriages as being for women only is discriminatory. As there is no legislation against it, they are able to choose whether or not to remain, which is the reason why they did not get off. In the end the anger of the passengers forced them to alight, however, the train’s departure was delayed. Members of this group have ridden on women-only cars more than 1,000 times. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the ratio of victims of molestation in the metropolitan area in 2016 are as follows: 28.5% are teenagers, 45.7% are in their 20s, and 11.1% in their 30s. Over 70% of groping happens on trains and inside train stations. The Metropolitan Police Department deals with approximately 1,000 complaints of this type a year. Women receive preferential treatment in the form of discounts at restaurants, free admission to events and so forth. Some people view this as being discriminatory.
