Japan ’s unmanned asteroid probe , Hayabusa-2, has returned the capsule to earth after six years, completing a journey of around 5.2 billion kilometers.
Hayabusa-2’s mission was to collect material from the surface of the 900-meter wide asteroid Ryugu, which is located 15 light minutes from Earth.
The sand it brought back is said to contain organic matter that dates from the birth of the solar system, and this is expected to play a major role in understanding how the earth came into being.
The Hayabusa-2 collected black sand on its first landing on Ryugu in February 2019.
After successfully collecting gas on its second landing on Ryugu, the Hayabusa-2 dropped off a capsule in the Australian desert in December 2020.
The sand and the gas are now being analyzed in Japan.
The Hayabusa-2 still has another mission and will fly off to a 30-meter-diameter asteroid 10 billion kilometers away.
The Hayabusa-2 is expected to arrive at its destination, an asteroid, in 2031. Its mission goals include investigating the possibility of asteroid collisions with the Earth.
It’s said that the dinosaurs, once the kings of the earth, were wiped out because of a catastrophe caused by an asteroid crashing into the earth.
In 2010, the first Hayabusa spacecraft successfully landed on Itokawa, an asteroid that is smaller than Ryugyu.
The Japanese were thrilled when, despite encountering many difficulties, the first Hayabusa returned to Earth.
With this astounding feat, the image of the Hayabusa remains deeply embedded in their minds.
