The Yamanote line, that runs through the heart of Tokyo, is scheduled to get a new station in spring 2020.
Despite the fact that all station names on the Yamanote line have less than four kanji characters, the name announced was “Takanawa Ge-towei” (Gateway), which has an additional six katakana characters.
Since katakana is used in some station names these days, some people support this name as it is in step with the spirit of the times.
However, because there are many places of historical interest around the station, many people have called for the withdrawal of the name,
saying that it should be a simple name that reflects the area’s history.
