In Japan as part of measures to tackle Covid-19, a 100,000 yen subsidy was given to each citizen. In addition, to help companies keep going, a subsidy of up to two million yen was given to businesses whose sales fell by 50% or more compared to the previous year, even if just for one month, while up to one million yen was available to self-employed people running their own businesses. Because the application process was easy and the screening process was not too strict, a number of scams were uncovered in which people posed as sole proprietors to fraudulently receive one million yen. For instance, one scam involved getting students to set themselves up as self-employed business owners so that they could receive the subsidy. The issue came to light when the students realized they had been used by a criminal and consulted a lawyer.
