As Covid-19 infections increase rapidly, so too has the number of so called katakana words, that is terms adopted from English. Words such as “cluster,” “social distance,” “overshoot,” and “lockdown” are being used in the news on a daily basis. Even before this, many katakana words, such as “concept,” “compliance,” “privacy policy,” and “blackout,” were used, despite the fact that most Japanese people were not familiar with them. It is said that this is due to the media’s desire to convey concepts that did not previously exist in the Japanese language, or to create an intellectual atmosphere.
