Which Comes First, the Individual or Society?

When we express something in English, we start from the perspective of the individual and gradually zoom out. Contrastingly, in Japanese, we start with the big picture and gradually zoom into the individual. For example, this can be seen in the way addresses are written. In English, we start with the individual’s name, then the district, the city, the prefecture and end up with the country. In Japanese, we write these details in the opposite order. When it comes to the date, in British English, first we write the date, then the month, and end with the year. In Japanese, we write this information in the opposite order. To the Japanese way of thinking, first, we have the world (society), with the individual person existing in relation to it. This way of thinking is at the root of Japanese values and character formation, making it the core of Nihongo Spirit. Japanese adore the word “kizuna ,” which simply means “solidarity with others.” is linked to having compassion for and showing hospitality towards others. On the other hand, it is sometimes pointed out that we Japanese worry too much about what others may think of us. Some people say that this Japanese way of thinking might lead to totalitarianism. Nevertheless, in a world that tends to encourage people to prioritize their own egotistical needs and focus on their own interests, people in many different countries are now calling for people to think altruistically and put more of a focus on the greater good.
