Lesson on the Names of Nations
Scene 1. The words ookina kuni (big country) could be abbreviated to taikoku. If someone referred to a “taikoku in Asia,” many people would think this meant China. As Thailand is pronounced as Thai in Japanese, by adding koku or kuni (country) after tai, this, instead, could be taikoku. Scene 2. The Japanese word for joke is joudann, which is pronounced in a similar way to Jordan, a country in the Middle East. So, this is a pun. Scene 3. Some countries do not keep their promises. Therefore, the teacher asks his students which country springs to mind. Scene 4. The official name of the United States is the United States Of America. An abbreviation of the first three words before America, is USO, or lie in Japanese. Therefore, America is a liar.
